Beauty brand Glossier laid off more than 80 corporate workers on Wednesday, according to a report from Modern Retail.
In an email sent to employees, which was viewed by Modern Retail, CEO Emily Weiss said Glossier "got ahead of ourselves on hiring" and "prioritized certain strategic projects that distracted us from the laser-focus we needed to have on our core business: scaling our beauty brand."
Glossier was not immediately available to comment when contacted by Insider. In a statement to Business of Fashion, a company spokesperson said it was a "difficult but necessary decision."
According to Weiss' email, most of the cuts impacted the technology team. These services will be moved to external partners, she said.
Glossier, which launched in 2014 off the back of Weiss' beauty blog, Into the Gloss, became known as social media's favorite beauty brand. Weiss was credited for turning traditional beauty retail on its head by cracking the code for selling makeup directly to consumers through social-media channels.
Glossier grew to be a $1 billion company and opened stores in New York and Los Angeles.
However, the brand has come under increased pressure as new players entered the market and the beauty sector becomes more crowded.
During the pandemic, it permanently closed its LA and New York stores, leading to staff layoffs. Toward the end of 2021, however, the company started to refocus on brick-and-mortar retail. It opened new locations in LA, Seattle, and most recently, London. The company raised $80 million in funding to do so.
