Best Buy will start selling e-bikes, scooters and mopeds in a bid to loom large in what's expected to be a $70 billion electric transportation market

Best Buy announced Wednesday that it will start selling a variety of electric transportation products online, and in select Best Buy locations starting in October.

The electronics retailer will carry a selection of e-bikes, mopeds, scooters, and accessories. The brands include Unagi, Bird, Segway-Ninebot, SUPER73, and SWFT according to a press release.

"There's been incredible innovation in the e-transportation space, and we know more customers are looking for ways to efficiently and sustainably commute," Frank Bedo, senior vice president at Best Buy said in a press release. "As we grow this selection, we look forward to helping customers find the right products to fit their needs and supporting them as they hit the road safely."

At the beginning of the pandemic, bicycle sales saw a stark increase as more people took to the outdoors for enjoyment amid strict lockdowns. Bike sales have since dropped 23% as of April 2021 compared to sales from last year, according to NPD.

However, electric bikes are projected to become a $70 billion industry by 2027. As more Americans push to find eco-friendly ways to get around, electric bikes are an increasingly more attractive price-point than electric vehicles with prices of e-bikes ranging anywhere from $900-$5,000.

Electric transportation products are available online right now, but customers can visit Best Buy stores in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Miami, Orlando, New York, and Puerto Rico starting October 10, The Verge reports.
