  • A DoorDash driver was fired after he cursed at a woman for tipping $5 on a $20 order.
  • "It's a nice house for a $5 tip," the driver said, in a now-viral TikTok video of the incident.

A DoorDash delivery driver was fired for cursing at a woman who tipped him $5 on a $20 order.

TikTok user Lacey Purciful posted a video from a door camera that appeared to show the delivery driver handing her a pizza box from a red DoorDash bag – Purciful isn't visible in the video.

The driver says: "I just want to say it's a nice house for a $5 tip." Purciful can be heard firing back: "You're welcome," to which responds: "Fuck you," while walking away.

Purciful clarified in the comment section that she contacted DoorDash and the driver has since been fired. A spokesperson for DoorDash confirmed this in a statement to Insider.

"Respectfully asking for a tip is acceptable but abusing or harassing someone is never acceptable," the spokesperson said, adding: "Our rules exist to help ensure everyone who uses our platform - Dashers, customers, merchants - have a safe and enjoyable experience."

In another post of the same clip, Purciful asked: "So how much should I be tipping for a $20 pie??"

Tipping culture in the US has become a hot topic on TikTok in recent months. While some users say it's too extreme, others have defended service industry workers who often rely on tips because of low wages. Some businesses still pay workers a "tipped wage," which is a lower minimum wage that takes tips into account.

In May, Insider's Alex Bitter reported that some DoorDash drivers were accepting orders and then asking for extra tips before delivering items. One worker told Bitter that this is because some Dashers receive a base pay of as little as $2.75 per order without tips. The company told Insider that Dashers make, on average, $25 per hour.

Purciful received an outpouring of support from comments across her posts with one person saying: "5$ is a great tip. You didn't have to tip at all!! We always can decline!!"

Another wrote: "He should be appreciative he got anything."

Insider contacted Purciful on TikTok for further comment but did not immediately hear back.
