July 11 is usually the most wonderful time of the year, a day when any sugar-loving American can pop into their local 7-Eleven and walk out with a kid-sized Slurpee, free of charge.

But thanks to COVID, 7-Eleven Day will not be happening in 2020, the chain announced in a press release on Tuesday. Instead, the chain will give one million meals to hunger-relief organization Feeding America.

"At 7-Eleven, our top priority is the safety of customers, franchisees and employees," said 7-Eleven senior vice president and chief marketing officer Marissa Jarratt. "Gathering nine million of our closest friends in stores on one day just didn't feel right, but I am heartened that we now have the opportunity to help the communities and neighborhoods that have been the lifeline of our business since 1927."

July 11 has been the busiest day of the year for 7-Eleven stores for almost twenty years, according to Jarratt. "But this year, we have to make changes for the greater good."

The good news is that 7-Eleven is still giving out free Slurpees. But instead of squeezing the Slurpee giveaway into one day, the chain will automatically give every rewards member a coupon for a free medium Slurpee, redeemable from July 1 through the end of the month.

You can receive the coupon by downloading 7-Eleven's rewards app, 7Rewards, and creating an account.
