It’s been a little over a month that the Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio was commercially launched on 5th September and ever since the launch consumers have been using its services for free under the ‘Welcome offer’. Reliance Jio has now announced that the network has created a world record by crossing 16 million in total subscribers during the first month of operations.
Mr. Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited, said, “We are delighted and humbled by the overwhelming response across India to the Jio Welcome Offer. Jio is built to empower every Indian with the power of data. We are delighted that people have recognized this and are utilizing our services to the fullest. We are customer-obsessed and committed to improve every day to exceed expectations of our customers.” Mukesh Ambani had talked about becoming the biggest telecom player in the world during the launch of Jio services.

However, it wasn’t a smooth journey for Jio so far. The new telco was embroiled in a huge fight with the incumbent players like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea over the issue of point of interconnection (PoI) which helps callers connect from one network to other. Jio accused incumbent operators for trying to harm Jio’s entry in the market. Although call failures continue to be a huge issue for Jio customers, Jio had made voice calls completely free with no roaming charges as well. Mukesh Ambani has also claimed that Jio’s data plans are the cheapest in the world at Rs 50/GB.
