Redskins Coach Says Extent Of RGIII's Injury Is Unknown, He Didn't Put His Career At Risk Leaving Him In
Al Bello/Getty ImagesWashington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says that the extent of Robert Griffin III's knee injury is still unknown.
At a press conference, Shanahan said RGIII underwent an MRI, but more tests are needed to determine the nature of the injury.
Griffin will meet with Dr. James Andrews tomorrow to get those tests. Shanahan says the MRI was inconclusive because Griffin has had a number of previous knee injuries.
So no real news here.
Shanahan also addressed why he left RGIII in the game when he was obviously injured. Columnists absolutely ripped him this morning for it, but he said RGIII was cleared to play, adding, "Robert's our franchise quarterback. I'm not going to take a chance on his career to win a game."
Below you can find our full liveblog of the press conference:
3:31 p.m.: Shanahan again on the MRI: "I can't speculate." He says there are old injuries to both the ACL and LCL so it's hard make a definitive reading of the MRI. Andrews wants to do more extensive physical tests tomorrow.
3:28 p.m.: Shanahan says it's fairly common for players to tell him they're too injured to play. RGIII didn't do that.
3:25 p.m.: On leaving in RGIII: "Robert's our franchise quarterback. I'm not going to take a chance on his career to win a game." But when a doctor says it's okay, you've got to do what you think is right.
3:23 p.m.: Random questions about potential free agents now. It seems like the RGIII portion of the press conference may be over.
3:20 p.m.: "You take a look at the first quarter, everything just clicked."
3:19 p.m.: Shanahan says he didn't see any Seahawks players taking shots at RGIII late.
3:17 p.m.: Shanahan says he won't change anything about sideline injury procedures. He's satisfied with a medical doctor.

3:13 p.m.: References Adrian Peterson when asked about RGIII being unable to do anything in the offseason.
3:12 p.m.: "I really thought the field was okay." Says he likes natural grass more than turf.
3:09 p.m.: On leaving in RGIII, "I thought we made the right decisions."
3:08 p.m.: Lengthy exchange about what happened a few weeks ago, when Dr. James Andrews says he never cleared RGIII to return to a game against the Ravens. Bottom line: Andrews told Shanahan he could go back in the game, according to Shanahan.
3:07 p.m.: Shanahan, "There is a concern." Doesn't specify what that means.
3:07 p.m.: Shanahan won't discuss anything about what they saw on the MRI last night. RGIII will see Dr. James Andrews to get more tests, then we'll know more.
3:06 p.m.: Shanahan talked to the doctors 3-4 times during the game.
3:05 p.m.: RGIII had an MRI but they need more tests to figure out what's wrong.
