Rajnath Singh gets Defence Ministry in Narendra Modi's new cabinet

• Rajnath Singh, a veteran politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been vested with the charge of Defence ministry.
• He is one of the top three ministers in the new cabinet of Narendra Modi government for a second term.
• Singh won the seat from Lucknow with a margin of 340,00 votes against Poonam Sinha, wife of Shatrughan Sinha, a rebel BJP leader.

Rajnath Singh, a veteran politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been vested with the charge of Defence ministry. He is one of the top three ministers in the new cabinet of Narendra Modi government for a second term.
Singh won the seat from Lucknow with a margin of 340,00 votes against Poonam Sinha, wife of Shatrughan Sinha, a rebel BJP leader.

Rajnath Singh has been a politician for over 40 years. The first time he became a member of the state legislative assembly was in 1977. He served as BJP's party president from 2005 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2014. He was also the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous and politically significant state, in 2000.

Singh was inducted into the Union Cabinet as in charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs after BJP's landslide victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In his own words, the ministry's biggest achievement in the last five years was the curbing insurgency in the north-eastern part of India.
