Railways earned Rs 14.07 billion via cancellation of reserved tickets in FY17

In FY 2016-17, Indian Railways earned Rs 1407 crore billion just through the money charged on cancellation of reserved tickets, 25.29% more than their respective earning from last year.
The data was shared by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), an autonomous organisation operating under the Ministry of Railways, when activist Chandrashekhar Gaud filed a Right to Information (RTI) query enquiring the same.
"In its reply, the CRIS informed that earnings through ticket cancellation has [sic] gone up to Rs 14.07 billion during fiscal 2016-17, from Rs 11.23 billion in 2015-16. The earnings under this head amount were Rs 9.08 billion in fiscal 2014-15 and Rs 9.38 billion in FY 9.38 billion. This information is provided under the Passenger Reservation System (PRS)," Gaud said.
Not only via reserved tickets, the Railways is also earning when unreserved tickets are cancelled, which was Rs 17.87 crore in FY 2016-17, as compared to Rs 17.23 crore in FY 2015-16 and Rs 14.72 crore in FY 2014-15.
The jump in revenue was because of change in rules regarding the refund on cancelled tickets applied in November 2015, after which the cancellation fee was increased up to two times.
