Rahul Gandhi visits Ayodhya, first Nehru-Gandhi scion in 24 years

Rahul Gandhi visited Ayodhya today, since the demolition of the Babri Masjid 24 years ago in 1992. He became the first member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to visit Ayodhya while he is on “Kisan Yatra”. Rajiv Gandhi was the last member to visit Ayodhya in 1990.

However, there have been other members from the family, who came close. In 2014, Sonia Gandhi addressed a rally in Faizabad, nearly 7kms from Agra.

On multiple occasions, Varun Gandhi, who represents Sultanpur Constituency in Lok Sabha, has skipped the BJP rallies, he was scheduled to be a part of in Ayodhya.

Rahul visited the Hanumangarhi temple which is less than a km away from the site of Babri Masjid. This may be an attempt to pull off a significant showing in the assembly elections, scheduled for 2017.
