  • The Indian government scrapped Article 370 and Article 35A of the constitution, doing away with the special status of Kashmir.
  • Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called it an ‘abuse of executive power.’
  • He said that the nation is not made on plots of land, but by people.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today reacted strongly to the Kashmir issue, saying that the government abused its executive powers. Indian government scrapped Article 370 and Article 35A of the constitution, doing away Kashmir’s special status.

Gandhi who recently resigned at the President of the Congress Party said that the nation is not made on plots of land, but by people.

“National integration isn’t furthered by unilaterally tearing apart J&K, imprisoning elected representatives and violating our Constitution,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.

Members of the Congress party too aggressively protested against the government's decision. “I don’t think you are thinking about Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), you violated all rules and converted a state into a union territory overnight,” said Adhir Ranjan, the Member of Parliament from Berhampore.

The move seems to have created a rift within the opposition party as it did with ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s allies. Congress Parliamentarians like Jaiveer Shergill and Janardan Dwivedi stood by the Centre’s decision.

BJP’s own ally Janata Dal (Secular) had walked out in protest to the decision, while its rivals like Aam Aadmi Party member and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal came in support of the decision.

Yesterday, the upper house of the Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill 2019. With this, the government has rewritten the history of India and the move has bifurcated the ‘state’ into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
