This 53-year-old Democrat becomes the first South Asian American woman to chair the US House of Representatives

Indian-American Congresswoman, Pramila Jayapal took to Twitter to announce as she became the first South Asian American woman to chair in the US House of Representatives.

The 53-year-old Democrat from Washington DC, on Tuesday said, "Today, I became the first South Asian American woman to preside over the US House of Representatives. Beyond proud to serve in the most diverse Congress in our nation's history and to hold the gavel today," Jayapal tweeted.

The tweet included a clip showcasing her session in the US House as a temporary speaker.


Of the total Asian American representatives from Congress, 14 have been serving the US house. The 116th Congress broke records with women and lawmakers crossing racial and religious barriers, including an all-time high for Asian American lawmakers.

Jayapal has been propelling healthcare programmes and working for the LGBTQ community. Recently, she introduced a bipartisan law focussed to grow awareness around the increasing heart diseases among Indians and other parts of the South Asian Community.
