“Possession And Sale Of Foreign-origin Fireworks Illegal”: Commerce Ministry

In view of Diwali, the Commerce and Industry Ministry has said that “possession and sale of fireworks of foreign origin is illegal and punishable under law.”

“It has been brought to the notice of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) that fireworks of foreign origin were illegally brought into India under false declarations,” the ministry said in a statement.

It further said that many fireworks associations have reported that these smuggled fireworks consist of 'Potassium Chlorate' – a dangerous and hazardous chemical that can catch fire or explode spontaneously.

The TamilNadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers' Association has also informed that illegal, foreign-made fireworks have made their way into the country in large quantities, and they are expected to be sold through retail outlets during Diwali, it added.

"Possession and sale of fireworks of foreign origin in India is illegal and punishable under the law. Information about possession and/or sale of such fireworks may be reported to the nearest police station for suitable action," the ministry’s statement said.

No licence has ever been issued for import of fireworks under the Explosives Rules, 2008 by Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organisation, a subordinate office of DIPP.
