Former President Donald Trump may run for federal office again, but he has no chance of winning another national election, according to The Wall Street Journal's editorial board.

In an op-ed published Sunday, the board urged Republicans to move on from the former commander-in-chief after his role in the deadly January 6 riot at the US Capitol. The House impeached Trump on a charge of "incitement of insurrection" last month, but the Senate voted to acquit the former president on Saturday.

"He lost re-election before the events of Jan. 6, and as President his job approval never rose above 50%," the board wrote. "He may go on a revenge campaign tour, or run as a third-party candidate, but all he will accomplish is to divide the center-right and elect Democrats."

The board pointed to Republican losses in Georgia last month, which cost the party its control over the Senate, as additional evidence of Trump's waning national popularity. The two GOP incumbents, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, ran - and lost - on Trump's agenda.

"The country is moving past the Trump Presidency, and the GOP will remain in the wilderness until it does too," the board wrote.

The Journal's board often wrote favorably of Trump during his tenure. The outlet is owned by medial mogul Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News.

However, the board has changed its stance and condemned the former commander-in-chief for his "dishonest challenge to the 2020 election." The Journal's board called on Trump to resign the day after his supporters stormed and laid siege to the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from finalizing President Joe Biden's win.

In Sunday's op-ed, the board also came out against any efforts to potentially bar Trump from running for office again. Instead, they wrote, it's "far better to trust the voters" to make that decision in the voting booth if Trump's name appears on a ballot again.

Trump hasn't shut down the idea of seeking public office in the future, potentially eyeing a presidential run in 2024. Since January 6, congressional Republicans and state and local GOP leaders have been divided as to whether Trump still heads the GOP.

A Fox News poll from December showed that Americans may be moving past Trump, as 57% of respondents said they would rather have someone else lead the party in the next election. But a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Tuesday shows that Trump still has support among Republicans after his impeachment trial, with 54% of respondents saying they would choose him in a hypothetical 2024 GOP primary.
