Ukraine says Russia has 'almost completed' its buildup of border troops for a potential invasion

Ukraine warned that Russia was almost done gathering troops along the country's border in apparent preparation for an invasion.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry's latest intelligence assessment, obtained by CNN, said that Russia has deployed more than 127,000 troops, made up of land, sea, and air troops.

It also said that Russia is trying to limit what the US can do to respond and is "trying to split and weaken the European Union and NATO," CNN reported.

The assessment also said Russia is supporting more than 35,000 rebels in eastern Ukraine, as well as having some of its own military members there.

The US, Ukraine, and their allies have repeatedly warned that Russia appears poised and ready to invade.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Tuesday: "We believe we're now at a stage where Russia could at any point launch an attack on Ukraine. I would say that's more stark than we have been."

She called the situation at Ukraine's border an "extremely dangerous situation."

Russia has denied plans to invade Ukraine.

Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula in 2014, and supports armed separatists in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

The war between Russian-backed rebels and Ukrainian troops has killed more than 13,000 people in recent years.
