Trump has 'cold-like' symptoms after testing positive for COVID-19, and may have been showing signs of the virus as early as Wednesday

President Donald Trump has mild, cold-like symptoms after being diagnosed with COVID-19, according to the New York Times.

Trump attended a fundraiser at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he reportedly appeared lethargic. The president came in contact with roughly 100 people at the event.

The president may have been showing signs of the virus as early as Wednesday, per Bloomberg News reporter Jennifer Jacobs. Aides to the president sensed he was not feeling well and some were concerned he had coronavirus.

The White House did not offer a comment when contacted by Insider. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Friday morning told reporters that Trump has "mild symptoms," but did not elaborate.

It's unclear precisely how Trump may have contracted the virus, and whom he may have exposed.

Trump's long-time adviser Hope Hicks tested positive for the virus on Thursday morning. Hicks was on Air Force One without a mask on Tuesday, and was traveling with the president for his rally in Minnesota on Wednesday.

First Lady Melania Trump also tested positive for the virus.

The president attended a number of events and meetings over the past week, including with Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett over the weekend. He was also in relatively close proximity to former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday for the first presidential debate.

Biden is being tested for the virus on Friday morning, per CNN. Responding to the president and first lady's diagnosis in a tweet, Biden said: "Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family."

Ronna McDaniel, the RNC chairwoman, tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday, per Maggie Haberman of the New York Times. McDaniel was in contact with Trump last Friday.

More than 7.2 million people have been infected with COVID-19 in the US, and there have been over 207,000 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins. No country has higher reported numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths than the US.
