The House will vote to strip conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee assignments
- House Democrats will vote on Thursday to strip conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee assignments.
- Democratic leadership said it couldn't come to an agreement with Republicans over how to deal with Greene.
- The vote puts Republicans in a politically tricky position.
House Democrats announced that they will vote Thursday to strip Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right Georgia Republican, of her committee assignments amid escalating controversy over her support for a slew of conspiracy theories.
This puts Republicans in a tricky position: they will be forced to either strip Greene of her assignments or support the freshman congresswoman and implicitly endorse the lies, misinformation, and bigotry she routinely spreads.
The second highest-ranking Democrat, Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, said he wasn't able to come to an agreement with Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy over what to do about Greene.
"It is clear there is no alternative to holding a floor vote on the resolution to remove Representative Greene from her committee assignments," Hoyer said.
It's long been reported that Greene traffics in conspiracy theories, including QAnon. But new reporting on Greene's statements about mass school shootings and her support for executing Democratic politicians has sparked heavy bipartisan backlash in recent days.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and a few other top Republicans have condemned Greene's beliefs.
Greene claimed in a tweet earlier this week that she spoke with former President Donald Trump, who endorsed her during her campaign, and that he continues to support her.
"I had a GREAT call with my all time favorite POTUS, President Trump!" she tweeted. "I'm so grateful for his support and more importantly the people of this country are absolutely 100% loyal to him because he is 100% loyal to the people and America First."
