The Federal Election Commission wants Rep. George Santos to announce whether or not he's running for reelection, according to a letter from the agency obtained by CNN.
In the letter sent on Tuesday, the FEC wrote that Santos' campaign committee has "accepted contributions and/or made expenditures in support of your 2024 candidacy."
The embattled representative "must either disavow these activities by notifying the Commission in writing that you are not a candidate," the agency wrote, or declare his intention to run for reelection by March 14.
Santos' office declined to comment when reached by Insider.
According to ABC News, Santos' campaign committee reported more than a dozen contributions totaling $28,000 and expenditures of around $43,000 after the November election.
Santos' first term has been mired in controversies over his repeated lies about his professional and personal history.
The representative has also been the target of tension within the Republican Party. At the State of the Union Tuesday, C-SPAN captured an apparent tense back-and-forth between Santos and Sen. Mitt Romney.
According to a late January poll, 78% of voters in Santos' district want him to resign.
Constituents from his district gathered in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to demand Santos' removal from Congress.
