The director of the CIA met the de facto leader of the Taliban on Monday in Kabul, The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed US officials.
William J. Burns met Abdul Ghani Baradar met as the US and other western nations scramble to evacuate their own citizens and Afghans who helped its militaries after the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan.
The CIA would not comment to the Post about the contents of the meeting to The Post.
But The Post reported that it was "likely" the meeting included talks about President Joe Biden's plans to conclude evacuations from Afghanistan by his own August 31 deadline.
Biden is expected to decide on Tuesday if he will extend this deadline so the US can evacuate more people.
But the Taliban has warned that there would be "consequences" if the US does so.
Countries like the UK and Spain are warning that they will not be able to get all of their people out unless they were given more time.
