- Texas Gov. Greg Abbott did not attend the funerals of
Uvalde victims , documents show. - Schedules obtained by local media do not include any funerals of those killed.
Texas governor Greg Abbott skipped the funerals of the 19 children and 2 teachers killed in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, scheduling records obtained by local media show.
KXXV, an ABC affiliate, obtained the schedule though a record request. It showed that Abbott last visited Uvalde on June 5, nine days after the mass shooting, for a memorial event.
The schedule covers May 25 to June 14, and included 3 visits to Uvalde in the wake of the shooting, though none for funerals. The last funeral for a victim was held on June 25 in San Angelo, Texas, for 10-year-old victim Uziyah Garcia, and reports do not indicate that Abbott attended.
Abbott and other state authorities were a focal point of anger from the relatives of victims. A report by the state legislature released Sunday found that police badly mishandled their response to the atrocity, waiting for an hour before confronting the shooter. Officers also prevented parents accessing the building to try and rescue children, at times aggressively.
Some relatives of victims have called for more stringent laws on accessing firearms to be introduced in the wake of the shooting, a proposal Abbott and other Republican leaders rejected.
Angel Garza, father of 10-year-old victim Amerie Jo Garza, told KXXV that Abbott "has yet to reach out" in the wake of the killing.
Abbott's office told the Texas Chronicle that Abbott had visited "every family who requested a meeting."
"Many families requested private funerals, and the Governor and First Lady instead sent flowers and condolences to let the loved ones know they remain in their prayers," the statement said.
