Suzie Price is running against Rex Richardson in Long Beach, California's mayoral race.
Polls closed in the state at 8 p.m. local time, or 11 p.m. EST.
2022 General EmbedsMayor Robert Garcia, the current leader of Long Beach, announced in December 2021 that he would not be running for a third term in office. Instead, he's running to represent the state's 42nd Congressional District in the US House of Representatives on the Democratic ticket.
Price has been a member of the Long Beach City Council since 2014, where she is the chair of the council's Port, Transportation, Infrastructure Committee and the vice chair of its Public Safety Committee. In addition to her work on the city council, Price is also a senior assistant district attorney with the Orange County District Attorney's office.
According to her campaign website, Price is running on a platform addressing both the "spike in both violent and property crimes" in Long Beach and the city's homelessness crisis.
Richardson, Price's opponent, has also served on the Long Beach City Council since 2014. Richardson has received endorsements from several members of the city council in addition to the mayor, Garcia.
If elected, Richardson's website says he also plans to try and alleviate the homelessness crisis in the city, hire additional police officers and firefighters, and help ensure that "immigrant communities have equal access to economic and social opportunities.
