Sen. Markwayne Mullin is now fundraising off of his near-brawl in a Senate hearing — because of course he is
- Sen. Markwayne Mullin nearly came to blows with a witness at a hearing on Tuesday.
- Now, he's doing perhaps the most predictable thing possible — using it to raise money.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
And when you exhibit conduct that's obviously unbecoming of a US senator, make money off of it.
That's the lesson that Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma appears to have taken from his near-brawl with Teamsters President Sean O'Brien at a hearing of the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee on Tuesday.
Mullin was elected to the Senate in a special election last year, and he's not up for re-election for another 3 years.
Nonetheless, he and his political team appear to have sensed a ripe opportunity to raise some extra money: with a $35 donation, supporters can receive a black T-shirt that says "Anytime, Anyplace" across the front.
That's a reference to a tweet from O'Brien that appeared to challenge Mullin to a fight. "Anyplace, Anytime cowboy," he wrote.
As Business Insider recently reported, theatrics has increasingly become a business model for some lawmakers.
"You see it every day here, right?" Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said at the time. "You see it in the made-for-TV comments in committee meetings that have, oftentimes, little or nothing to do with the subject matter of the meeting."
