Two Capitol Police officers were injured, one fatally, on Friday when a car crashed into a barricade outside an entrance to the Capitol, the agency said.
The barricade is on Constitution Avenue across the street from Senate office buildings. On Friday afternoon, when the House and the Senate were out of session, staffers were notified that the complex was on lockdown because of an "external security threat."
Yogananda Pittman, the acting chief of the Capitol Police, and Robert Contee, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, said in a news conference that one officer had died and that a suspect had been shot and killed.
"It is with a very, very heavy heart that I announced one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries," Pittman said. The officer's identity has not been made public.
Footage captured by Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich showed the aftermath of the crash.
After the injured officers were transported to a hospital, National Guard troops were deployed.
On the east side of the Capitol, the Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman filmed a stunning and rare video of a helicopter landing.
