Russia is now accusing the US of also being behind the drone attack on the Kremlin. Others say it was Russia itself.
- Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov blamed the US for drone strikes on the Kremlin.
- "Decisions on such actions and such terrorist attacks are made not in Kyiv, but in Washington," he said.
Russia has claimed the US was involved in a drone strike on the Kremlin that it alleges was part of a Ukrainian plot to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Offering no evidence for the claims, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the attack was orchestrated in Washington, DC.
"Such attempts to disown this both in Kyiv and in Washington are, of course, absolutely ridiculous," Peskov told reporters Thursday.
"We know very well that decisions on such actions and such terrorist attacks are made not in Kyiv, but in Washington. And Kyiv is already doing what it is told to do."
On Wednesday, Russia said that two Ukrainian drones targeted the Kremlin as part of an assassination bid.
Unverified footage circulating on social media showed an explosion on a dome in the Kremlin complex, the citadel in Moscow that is the center of the Russian government.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said Thursday that Russian claims the US orchestrated the drone attacks were "ridiculous," reported CNN.
Ukraine has denied Russia's allegations, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday telling reporters that Ukraine was focused on repelling Russian invaders in its own territory.
James Patton Rogers, a military historian and adviser to NATO, told Insider that it's possible the strike and the accompanying rhetoric was orchestrated by Russia to justify a possible assassination attack on Ukraine's Zelenskyy.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at a Washington Post event Wednesday said that Russian claims about the alleged attack had to be taken to be taken "with a very large shaker of salt."
Russia threatened a response to the alleged attack, and on Thursday launched a series of drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the Black Sea port of Odessa. Russian hardliners have called on the Kremlin to assassinate Zelenskyy in revenge for the drone strikes.
The US is Ukraine's key backer in its fight against the Russian invasion, having provided $36 billion in military and other aid to Kyiv.
Russia has sought to portray its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine as a battle against a US and NATO plot to destroy Russia.
