Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids will serve a third term in Congress, defeating Republican challenger Amanda Adkins in a rematch of their 2020 contest in a district that is now more Republican-leaning.

Polls closed in the state at 7 p.m. local time. Given the state has multiple timezones, the first polls closed at 8 p.m. EST and the last polls closed at 9 p.m. EST.

2022 General Embeds

Kansas' 3rd Congressional District candidates

Davids took on healthcare executive Adkins once again, one of many 2020 House rematches on the ballot this November.

Davids made history in 2018 as one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress when she bested four-term Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder. Republicans aimed at eliminating a rare Democrat in Kansas' congressional delegation in 2020, but Davids notched a 10-point win under the district's old lines.

Adkins hammered Davids over inflation and her vote for Democrats' COVID rescue plan and the Inflation Reduction Act. Kansas is also home to one of the nation's largest backlashes against restrictions on abortion rights, leading Adkins to stress that she sees no further need for federal action on the matter.

Voting history for Kansas' 3rd Congressional District

Under the old lines, Democrats' margins have exploded at the top ticket as former President Donald Trump's presence sparked a suburban revolt. But Republicans transformed what was a double-digit Biden district to one the current president would have only narrowly won.

Kansas' 3rd District now juts out further past the Kansas City suburbs, giving it a much more rural feel. Crucially, according to FiveThirtyEight, Wyandotte County, where Kansas City is located, is now split for the first time since the 1980s. Democrats alleged that lines, including splitting the majority-minority county, violated the state constitution, but Kansas Supreme Court upheld the new map.

The money race

According to OpenSecrets, Davids raised $6.7 million, spent $5.7 million, and had about $1.5 million on hand, as of September 30. Adkins raised $3.2 million, spent $2.3 million, and had about $932,000 remaining, as of September 30.

As of mid-October, super PACs, national party committee, and other non-candidate groups had together pumped more than $7 million into the race to advocate for or against the candidates.

What experts say

The rematch between Davids and Adkins was rated as "tilt Democratic" by Inside Elections and a "toss-up" by both The Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
