The races & the stakes:

The biggest election at the top of the ticket in Massachusetts is the open race for governor as incumbent Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is set to leave office after two terms.

Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey has cleared the field for her party's nomination and will face either former state Rep. Geoff Diehl or wealthy businessman Chris Doughtry, who are fighting it out for the GOP nomination on Tuesday.

Baker, a former healthcare executive who governed as a moderate, pragmatic, and pro-choice leader, leaves office with sky-high approval ratings among Democrats. But Healey, who made a name for herself bringing high-profile lawsuits as AG, is heavily to favored to flip the governor's office from Republican to Democratic control in the general election.

Current GOP Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito is also leaving office along with Baker, opening up the state's second-highest office. The leading Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor are Salem Mayor Kim Discroll, state Sen. Eric Lesser, and state Rep. Tami Gouveia.

On the GOP side, former state Rep. Leah Cole Allen is running a campaign in line with Diehl's platform while another former state Rep., Kate Campanale, is running on a ticket with Doughtry.

The leading Democratic contenders to replace Healey as attorney general are former Boston City Council member Andrea Campbell and attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan. Jay McMahon has locked up the Republican nomination for the AG's office.

The retirement of longtime state auditor Suzanne Bump has opened up another statewide office for the taking. State Sen. Diana DiZioglo and public transportation proponent Chris Dempsey are running in the Democratic primary for the seat, which Bump has occupied since 2011. The winner will face Republican Anthony Amore.

All of Massachusetts' nine Democratic US House representatives are up for reelection in 2022, but none are facing serious primary opposition.
