Republican incumbent Gov. Phil Scott faces off against Democrat Brenda Siegel in Vermont's gubernatorial election.

Vermont's gubernatorial candidates

Scott is approaching the end of his first term in office after being elected in 2016. Prior to his time as governor, Scott, a Republican, served for three terms as the state's lieutenant governor under Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin.

Siegel, Scott's challenger, is a business owner and educator running on the Democratic ticket. She previously ran for governor in 2018 and lieutenant governor in 2020 but was unable to advance past the Democratic primary elections. She's running on a platform focused on the state's housing crisis, overdose crisis, climate change, and the economy.

Vermont's voting history

Vermont backed President Joe Biden over former President Donald Trump by 35 percentage points in 2020, making this race one of six Republican-held governorships up for election in a state carried by Biden in the 2020 presidential election. In 1992, the state voted for Bill Clinton and has sided with Democrats in every presidential race since. In the gubernatorial races, however, Vermont has voted for a Republican all but three times since 2002.

What experts say

The race between Scott and Siegel is rated as "solid Republican" by Inside Elections, "solid Republican" by The Cook Political Report, and "safe Republican" by Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
