Reporters are seething over being shut out of Naomi Biden’s wedding, which drew inspiration from Time magazine images of past White House nuptials
- Naomi Biden and Peter Neal's White House wedding was closed to the news media.
- Reporters complaints about access grew louder Tuesday when Vogue's exclusive pre-wedding coverage posted online.
President Joe Biden's granddaughter Naomi Biden drew inspiration for her wedding Saturday from vintage issues of Time magazine, featuring past White House nuptials, Vogue reported.
But her White House wedding to Peter Neal was closed to the news media, frustrating White House reporters whose complaints grew louder on Tuesday when Vogue magazine's exclusive pre-wedding coverage was posted online.
"I spent four years covering the Trump WH and two years covering the Biden WH," tweeted Ashley Parker of the Washington Post. "What's fascinating is that they both lie, albeit in v different ways. Trump team was shameless, whereas Biden team is too cute by half."
The Trump White House, of course, routinely lied to reporters from the podium about Donald Trump's statements and record, while the Biden White House in this instance is being accused of being sly about a wedding ceremony.
Parker added in a second tweet, "Not all lies are created equal and the magnitude, frequency and audacity is certainly different." But she said the Biden White House has waived Post reporters off correct reporting on his Supreme Court pick, attendees in private meetings and his Egypt trip. (A White House aide tweeted the Post reported that a trip was confirmed before it was.)
Other reporters tweeted the Vogue story along with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre's comments to reporters on November 18: "They have decided to make this wedding private. It is a family event. It is -- and we are going to respect Naomi and Peter's wishes."
Jean-Pierre, on Tuesday, said during her news briefing that neither Vogue nor any other media outlet had access to the actual wedding. Vogue held their photos under embargo until Tuesday "so that it would give ample time" for many photos to be in the public sphere.
"This was not a national security meeting, this was not an economic summit," Jean-Pierre said. "This was a young couple's wedding with their friends and family."
There have been only 19 weddings and four receptions at the White House since 1800, including one for President Grover Cleveland and nine for first daughters, according to Vogue.
The groom, Peter Neal, purchased the vintage issues of Time magazine for his future bride on eBay, Vogue reported. The magazines showed the weddings of Tricia Nixon in 1971 and of Lyndon B. Johnson's daughters, Luci and Lynda, in 1966 and 1967.
"There's just such beauty and history in this place, and we really wanted to honor that," Naomi told Vogue.
Reporters during the news briefing a day before the wedding made the case for access, saying the private ceremony defied precedent for "the people's house." Another reporter noted that there is a historic record of other White House weddings because the news media was granted limited access to the events.
Jill Biden is personal friends with Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, POLITICO reported in October. Wintour, who is active in Democratic politics, hosted her friend for a virtual discussion during the 2020 presidential campaign.
Former first lady Melania Trump blasted Wintour's decision to put the first lady on the cover of Vogue in 2021, accusing the magazine of bias. Trump was on the cover of Vogue in 2005, but not as the first lady.
Naomi Biden is the daughter of Hunter Biden and Kathleen Buhle, who divorced in 2017.
