White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki criticized Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's decision to step up inspections of commercial trucks at the Texas-Mexico border, calling it "unnecessary."

"Governor Abbott's unnecessary and redundant inspections of trucks transiting ports of entry between Texas and Mexico are causing significant disruptions to the food and automobile supply chains, delaying manufacturing, impacting jobs, and raising prices for families in Texas and across the country," Psaki said in a statement Wednesday.

Abbott's office has said the move is an effort to combat "cartel-facilitated smuggling" at the US border.

Mexican truckers have been protesting Abbott's new move at the border, causing north-bound traffic at one of the busiest entry points into Texas to be blocked for at least two days, Insider previously reported.

Psaki that businesses are now calling on Abbott to reverse the decision because trucks are facing up to five hours of delays at the border crossing.

"The continuous flow of legitimate trade and travel and CBP's ability to do its job should not be obstructed," Psaki said. "Governor Abbott's actions are impacting people's jobs, and the livelihoods of hardworking American families."
