At a fundraising event in Chicago on Friday, President Joe Biden broke his silence on Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter, saying the social media platform "spews lies all across the world."
The comments were made as Biden warned donors about the long-term effects the upcoming midterm election will have on coming years, Bloomberg reported.
"Now what are we all worried about? Elon Musk goes out and buys an outfit that sends and spews lies all across the world," Biden said, according to multiple reports.
He added: "There's no editors anymore. There's no editors. How do we expect kids to be able to understand what is at stake?"
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre earlier today told reporters that the Biden administration supports social media platforms taking steps to "reduce hate speech and misinformation."
"That belief extends to Twitter, it extends to Facebook and any other social media platforms where users can spread misinformation," Jean Pierre said.
Musk, a self-described "free-speech absolutist" has pledged to make the social platform akin to a digital town square that follows first amendment protections of speech. Since the $44 billion purchase, hate speech on the platform has spiked and major advertisers have suspended ads on Twitter over content moderation concerns.
Staff previously in charge of content moderation and the verification of political figures have been fired since the acquisition was finalized as Musk makes progress on his pledge to investors to cut 75% of the platform's workforce.
Elon Musk and representatives for Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
