House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has denied telling Democrats that she intends to create a select committee to examine what went wrong on January 6, when a mob of former President Donald Trump's supporters attacked the US Capitol.

The news that Pelosi had backed such a committee was first reported by The Washington Post, which cited a source familiar with the conversation.

But speaking to reporters, Pelosi said she "did not make that announcement," adding that "somebody put out a false report," per CNN.

Republicans last month defeated an effort to create an independent commission to investigate the attack.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
