Pelosi says Trump is a 'very dangerous person' who could be impeached if he's not removed via the 25th Amendment
- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scorned President Donald Trump on Thursday and demanded he be removed from office by invocation of the 25th Amendment following the Capitol riots on Wednesday.
- "The president of the United States incited an armed insurrection against America," Pelosi said. "In calling for this seditious act, the president has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people."
- "I join the Senate Democratic leader in calling on the vice president to remove this president by immediately invoking the 25th Amendment," she added. "If the vice president and cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday demanded President Donald Trump be immediately removed from office via invocation of the 25th Amendment following riots at the US Capitol.
"The president of the United States incited an armed insurrection against America," Pelosi said during a news conference on Thursday. "In calling for this seditious act, the president has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people."
She announced that she's "calling on the vice president to remove this president by immediately invoking the 25th Amendment. If the vice president and Cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment."
Pelosi joins a growing number of Congress members, including top Democrat Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who have proposed invoking the 25th Amendment after pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol grounds and forced Congress to evacuate while they had met to certify the 2020 election results. Lawmakers returned hours later to complete the certification for President-elect Joe Biden's victory late Wednesday.
The unprecedented chaos left lawmakers shaken, with many condemning the violence and some blaming Trump for instigating it. The president had earlier told his supporters to come to the nation's capital in protest of the electoral process.
The 25th Amendment requires Vice President Mike Pence and a majority of Cabinet members to support Trump's removal based on a conclusion that he's unfit to hold office. The vice president then becomes acting president. Democrats have been leading the charge, though one Republican lawmaker, Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, has also backed the move.
Pelosi denounced Trump on Thursday as "a very dangerous person who should not continue in office," adding that: "This is urgent. This is emergency of the highest magnitude."
During her news conference, the House speaker also called on sitting Cabinet members to enforce Trump's removal.
"Do you stand by this president dangerously staying in office?" Pelosi said to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. To Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Pelosi asked, "What is it? Is it about success in business later? Or do you believe in this?"
"Ask each member of the Cabinet, do they stand by these actions? Are they ready to say: 'In the next 13 days, this dangerous man can do further harm to our country?'" she said.
