Pelosi promised to match donor contributions, but has yet to spend a dime

Pelosi promised to match donor contributions, but has yet to spend a dime
  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly promised to match donor funds in fundraising emails.
  • Records show that she hasn't matched a single contribution.
  • Pelosi raised over $4 million in the first quarter of 2021, when emails with promises to match donations were sent.

Despite sending dozens of emails to campaign donors promising to personally match contributions, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hasn't spent a dime of her personal wealth.

That's according to Federal Election Commission records reviewed by Axios, which demonstrate that Pelosi hasn't contributed any personal funds to her campaign committee.

Pelosi for Congress, the House Speaker's campaign committee, sent over 50 emails to supporters between January and March promising that Pelosi would "personally" match campaign contributions, according to an archive of campaign emails maintained by Princeton University.

One such email from Pelosi for Congress promised to not just match donations, but to multiply that matching contribution. "I'm personally 4x-matching all gifts for these final 24 hours," an email from January said.

But it appears Pelosi, whose net worth is valued at about $114 million, didn't match contributions at all.

Her campaign raised over $4 million in the first quarter of 2021, when the emails with promises to match donations were sent. The majority of those contributions were below $200, Axios reported. Pelosi is a fundraising powerhouse among Democrats, with tens of millions of dollars raised in 2020 alone.

A representative for Speaker Pelosi's office declined to comment, and directed us to the Pelosi for Congress campaign. Representatives for the Pelosi for Congress campaign didn't respond to a request for comment as of publishing.
