Results: Pamela Goynes-Brown defeats Pat Spearman in North Las Vegas, Nevada's mayoral election
  • Regardless of who won, North Las Vegas will welcome its first Black mayor next term.
  • Pamela Goynes-Brown, a city council member, ran against state Sen. Pat Spearman.

Pamela Goynes-Brown defeated Pat Spearman in North Las Vegas, Nevada's mayoral race.

2022 General Embeds

The city's current leader, Mayor John Jay Lee, decided to run in Nevada's gubernatorial election instead of running for reelection. He came in fourth place in the Republican gubernatorial primary.

Goynes-Brown and Spearman were the top vote-getters in the city's seven-candidate primary in June, where Goynes-Brown received approximately 39 percent of the overall vote compared to Spearman's 17 percent.

Goynes-Brown is a second-generation member of the North Las Vegas City Council, a seat she's held since 2011. She is a retired educator and assistant principal and is the former mayor pro tempore of North Las Vegas, a position she served on two occasions.

Spearman has been a member of the Nevada Senate since 2012. Before her time in office, she served in the US Army for 29 years, ultimately retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. She also served as school board president of the San Marcos Independent School District Board in Texas, according to her campaign site.

If elected, she pledged she would have created new jobs, incentivized clean energy in the city, and would have developed "a medical corridor similar to Las Vegas' Medical District," according to her campaign site.
