- Trump is 77. Biden is 81. Most Americans said they think they're too old to run again.
- Nikki Haley said she thinks the first party to drop their aging leading candidate will win the race.
After outlets called the New Hampshire Republican primary in favor of former President Donald Trump, fellow candidate and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley bluntly explained to a crowd of supporters her perspective on the 2024 presidential race.
"Most Americans do not want a rematch between Biden and Trump," Haley said. "The first party to retire its 80-year-old candidate is going to be the one who wins this election."
While Haley may have a point — a majority of Americans told Business Insider in a poll they think President Joe Biden and Trump are too old to serve again as president — the two are by far the leading candidates for their respective parties.
Both Tuesday night's race and the Iowa caucuses were called for Trump just minutes after polls closed.
Biden is one of two established candidates in the Democratic primary race alongside Rep. Dean Phillips, who's gone on the record about his desire for younger Democratic leadership.
Even though Biden didn't appear on New Hampshire's Democratic primary ballot, he still easily bested Phillips on Tuesday after local volunteers mounted a campaign to write in Biden's name.
Though Haley didn't win the New Hampshire primary or in Iowa, and still massively trails in national polling, she still has viable paths to the Republican nomination, including an unconventional one: outlasting Trump.
The former president is embroiled in a slew of legal trouble, stemming in part from the 91 felony charges levied against him in 2023.
If he's convicted of a crime and chooses to drop out of the race, Haley could position herself as the next-best alternative given the delegates she amasses on the campaign trail.
