Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman laughed on Thursday when asked what he thought of Capitol Hill's likely impending Empire State of Mind.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's decision to step down from party leadership has cleared the way for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, currently the fifth most powerful House Democrat, to become the leader of House Democrats come January. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to remain in his post, meaning the two most powerful Democrats on the Hill will both hail from New York City. In fact, both men live in Brooklyn.

"That's pretty gangster," Bowman, a former middle school principal in the Bronx, said in response to Insider when asked about what the moment means to him. "We've got great leaders from across the country but for it to land that way is pretty dope."

House Democrats won't formally elect their new leaders until new elections are held in the coming weeks. But Jeffries is thought to have the inside track. The New Yorker would be House Minority Leader and not Speaker of the House as a result of Democrats losing control of the lower chamber.

The potential New York minute would be a welcome respite for New Democrats after Republicans flipped four House seats in the deep blue state. One of those losses was Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, the head of House Democrats' campaign arm, who became the first leader of the Democrats' campaign operation to lose in decades.

Pelosi announced that while she will be stepping down from party leadership, she will remain in Congress. Her announcement set into motion a massive overhaul for the top 3 House Democrats, ushering in a new generation of party leadership.
