House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that she and her family are "heartbroken and traumatized" after a brutal hammer attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi.

In a statement to the House on Saturday, the congresswoman said: "Yesterday morning, a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me, and brutally attacked my husband, Paul."

"Our children, our grandchildren, and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop."

Pelosi expressed gratitude for law enforcement and medical professionals that responded to the incident and said her husband's condition "continues to improve."

"Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery," she said.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized after an intruder broke into the couple's San Francisco home in the early hours of Friday and "violently" attacked him with a hammer, authorities said.

He underwent surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hand. The congresswoman's office previously said that he is expected to recover fully.

The suspect was identified as David DePape, 42, and he faces charges including attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.

DePape shouted, "Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?" at the speaker's husband after breaking in, according to CNN.

He allegedly had a bag containing zip ties with him when he broke into the couple's home, a source briefed on the incident told CNN.

The suspected attacker was found to have engaged in various conspiracy theories online, including about COVID-19, the global elite, and election fraud.

The attack comes amid fears over a rise in threats towards US lawmakers, according to the US Capitol police.
