  • On Wednesday, President Donald Trump referenced a conspiracy theory involving the death of one of MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough's former congressional aides in 2001.
  • The aide's death had been ruled an accident, and police never suspected foul play.
  • Scarborough's wife and cohost Mika Brzezinski called Trump "sick" for pushing the theory.
  • CNN's Anderson Cooper also weighed in, saying it was an "utterly heartless" thing to say.

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski and CNN's Anderson Cooper slammed President Donald Trump on their shows on Wednesday, after he referenced a murder conspiracy involving Brzezinski's cohost and husband Joe Scarborough.

Trump brought up Scarborough in a tweet complaining about how his one-time campaign adviser Roger Stone had been convicted for witness tampering, making false statementd, and obstruction of justice, including lying about his dealings with WikiLeaks.

"Roger Stone has been treated very unfairly. How about that jury Forewoman, does anybody think that was fair. DISGRACEFUL! Stay tuned. @FoxNews And guys like Low Ratings Psycho Joe Scarborough are allowed to walk the streets? Open Cold Case!" Trump tweeted.

The president was referencing the July 2001 death of one of Scarborough's aides, back when he was serving as a Republican congressman in Florida.

After the body of 28-year-old Lori Klausutis was found dead in Scarborough's Fort Walton Beach office, the medical examiner determined that she had collapsed from an undiagnosed heart condition and died hitting her head in the fall.

Her death was ruled an accident and foul play was never suspected, according to The Washington Post. And Scarborough was in Washington, DC, at the time of her death.

Nevertheless, Trump has on multiple occasions questioned why Scarborough has not been investigated for Klausutis' death.

Brzezinski and Cooper quickly condemned the president's latest reference to the tragedy on their respective shows on Wednesday.

"Donald, you're a sick person," Brzezinski said on "Morning Joe" while defending her husband of two years. "You're really a cruel, sick, disgusting person."

Brzezinski suggested that Trump is attacking her husband because he "speaks the truth" about the president's "lack of ability to handle this massive human catastrophe."

She also called on Twitter to take down the message.

"You should be ashamed of yourself," she told the social media company.

Cooper also came to Scarborough's defense, saying the tweet was not only a slur against the "Morning Joe" co-host, but "utterly heartless to this woman's [Klausutis'] family and her memory."

Brzezinski and Scarborough used to be one of Trump's favorite political pundits before they started criticizing his comments on immigration in the 2016 election.

They briefly reconciled after he won office, but it was short-lived as the duo continued to call his leadership choices into question.

Lately, Scarborough has told the president to"turn off the TV" and start focusing on solving the crisis, while also suggesting that he should let Vice President Mike Pence take the reigns so he can "get checked out."
