  • The claim was her way of rejecting claims that she did play a role in organising events that day.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said that the protesters in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol "would've been armed" if she and Steve Bannon had been in charge of organizing it.

Greene, a far-right Republican from Georgia, made the remarks at a New York Young Republicans Club event on Saturday, according to reports by The New York Post and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

She made the comments as a mocking response to claims that she and Bannon had been involved in organizing the protests in Washington, DC, which morphed into the riot.

"Then Jan. 6 happened. And next thing you know, I organized the whole thing, along with Steve Bannon here. And I will tell you something, if Steve Bannon and I had organized that, we would have won. Not to mention, it would've been armed," Greene told the audience.

"See that's the whole joke, isn't it. They say that whole thing was planned and I'm like, are you kidding me? A bunch of conservatives, second amendment supporters, went in the Capitol without guns, and they think that we organized that?" Greene added.

Greene is an ardent supporter of Trump, and has promoted his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen by President Joe Biden.

The conspiracy theories inspired Trump's supporters to attack the Capitol in a bid to halt Biden's certification as president.

In April, Greene testified in Georgia courtroom after being sued by a group of Georgia voters seeking to bar her from office over her alleged involvement.

Under oath, the congresswoman denied involvement in the protests which erupted into the riot. She has also repeatedly defended the rioters, visiting a group of rioters imprisoned in Washington, DC, whom she described as "political prisoners."

Bannon was also present at the event Saturday. He was in July sentenced to four months in prison over his refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the riot. He is appealing the sentence.

The Saturday gala was attended by prominent Trump allies, including Donald Trump Jr, white nationalists, and European far right figures, The Southern Poverty Law Center reported.
