A man was arrested and charged with threatening to kill FBI agents as calls for violence and civil war increased after the raid on former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

Adam Bies, 47, from Mercer, Pennsylvania, was charged with influencing, impeding, or retaliating against a federal law-enforcement official, an FBI affidavit released on Monday said.

He was arrested on Friday and remains in custody pending a detention hearing, the Justice Department said.

Bies posted multiple threatening messages on Gab, the social-media platform frequently used by the far right, between August 10 and 11, the affidavit said. FBI agents searched Mar-a-Lago and seized documents from the estate on August 8.

"Every single piece of shit who works for the FBI in any capacity, from the director down to the janitor who cleans their fucking toilets deserves to die," one of Bies' posts said, according to the affidavit. "You've declared war on us and now it's open season on YOU."

In another post, Bies wrote that his "only goal is to kill more of them before I drop," the affidavit said, saying he was referencing killing himself.

Bies posts were flagged to the FBI by MEMRI Domestic Terrorism Threat Monitor, the domestic-terrorism tracking group, the affidavit said. Gab later provided the FBI with his subscriber data, the affidavit said.

Gab did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Bies' threats came days after FBI agents raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida last week and seized about 20 boxes of items, including 11 sets of documents that were marked top secret.

Bies did not make any reference to the raid in his posts, according to the affidavit.

But one of his posts referenced the Nazi SS paramilitary group and the KGB, the Soviet security agency, saying: "I'll shoot an SS officer in the heard just as quick as I'd shoot a KGB officer in the head … Police state scum are police state scum."

Those comparisons mirrored comments made by some congressional Republicans and conservative commentators shortly after the raid.

Steve Bannon, who once served as Trump's White House chief strategist, told Fox News that "the FBI right now is the Gestapo" while GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert called the raid "Gestapo crap," referring to Nazi Germany's secret police.

Those comments were heavily criticized by other political leaders, including GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, as well as the US Holocaust Museum.

Pro-Trump internet channels have also seen a spike in talk of civil war since the raid.

Over the weekend, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security said they had seen a surge in threats after the Mar-a-Lago raid, CBS News reported.

"These threats are occurring primarily online and across multiple platforms, including social media sites, web forums, video sharing platforms, and image boards," the agencies said in a joint bulletin.

The bulletin also said that there had been a specific threat "to place a so-called dirty bomb in front of FBI Headquarters and issuing general calls for 'civil war' and 'armed rebellion.'"

It is unclear who made this threat. The FBI and DHS did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

On Monday, Trump warned that "terrible things" would happen if people did not calm down about the FBI raid, but resumed his attacks on the Justice Department and the Florida judge who approved the FBI search warrant hours later.
