Majority of Americans say Trump should be criminally charged for role in Jan. 6 Capitol riot, new poll shows

• In an Ipsos/ABC News poll, 58% of respondents said Trump should be criminally charged for the January 6 riot.
• Poll respondents said Trump "bears a good or great amount of responsibility for the events of Jan 6."

A majority of Americans say that former President Donald Trump should be criminally charged for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, an Ipsos/ABC News poll finds.

Fifty-eight percent of poll respondents "believe that Trump bears a good or great amount of responsibility for the events of Jan 6 and that he should be charged with a crime."

The survey comes as the Jan. 6 House committee continues to hold its public hearings about its investigation into the Capitol siege.

The percentage favoring criminal charges for the former president has risen since the attack unfolded in January 2021, when 54% of respondents to a January ABC News/Washington Post poll said Trump should be charged with inciting a riot.

In an April survey posing a similar question, 52% of respondents said Trump should be charged with a crime.

In the committee's third public hearing on Thursday, they detailed the pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to obstruct the electoral count on January 6, Insider's Grace Panetta reported.

Greg Jacob, Pence's former chief counsel, and retired Judge J. Michael Luttig testified that they advised Pence as he denied Trump and his attorney's efforts to get him to intervene in the electoral process. Luttig said during the hearing that unduly declaring Trump the winner of the election would have "been tantamount to a revolution within a constitutional crisis in America."

He also warned that Trump and his allies may attempt an election coup in the future and "succeed in 2024 where they failed in 2020."

"The former president and his allies are executing that blueprint for 2024 in open and plain view of the American public," Luttig said.
