Liz Cheney says Trump's Jan. 6 committee testimony won't be a 'circus,' 'food fight,' or like his 'first debate against Joe Biden'
- Liz Cheney said the January 6 committee won't let Donald Trump turn his testimony "into a circus."
- The committee officially subpoenaed Trump on Friday, calling for him to sit before the panel by November 14.
Rep. Liz Cheney on Sunday said the January 6 committee will treat Donald Trump's testimony seriously and will make sure it does will not mirror his freewheeling and combative 2020 presidential debate with Joe Biden.
"The committee treats this matter with great seriousness," Cheney told Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet the Press."
"He's not going to turn this into a circus. This isn't going to be, you know, his first debate against Joe Biden and the circus and the food fight that became. This is a far too serious set of issues."
The committee officially subpoenaed the former president on Friday, calling for him to turn over critical documents by November 4 and appear before the committee by November 14, which is after the midterm elections.
Cheney said the committee had "made clear exactly what his obligations are."
In response to the committee's unanimous decision to subpoena him earlier this month, Trump sent a letter in which he repeated his disproven claims about the 2020 election being stolen from him.
"We are anticipating that the former president will understand his legal obligation, will comply with the subpoena. We've made clear in the subpoena a number of things, including that if he intends to take the Fifth that he ought to alert us of that ahead of time," Cheney said.
"We are going to proceed in terms of the questioning of the former president under oath. It may take multiple days. And it will be done with a level of rigor and discipline and seriousness that it deserves."
She added that the committee has "many, many alternatives that we will consider" if Trump refuses to comply with the subpoena. Cheney added that the panel has information on "Donald Trump's personal and direct role in managing and overseeing and coordinating the sophisticated multi-part plan to overturn the election."
