Delaware Democratic Gov. John Carney is running for reelection against Republican challenger Julianne Murray.

The candidates:

Carney's decades-long career in public office started with a stint as lieutenant governor, then as the state's sole at-large congressman for three terms. He has been governor since 2017, and is now seeking a second term, focused on the pandemic, education, the environment and issues related to race.

On the other hand, Murray, who has no political experience, has been operating her own law firm for the past eight years. Her platform is centered around safe neighborhoods and a strong economy.

The two have clashed over the state's COVID-19 response, a key contention point in the race. Murray argues Delaware should fully re-open without any restrictions, while Carney believes the state should continue taking precautions to avoid spikes in coronavirus cases.

Carney has received numerous endorsements, from local unions, groups that represent the LGBT community and Planned Parenthood of Delaware. Murray has clinched some support from former politicians, including Newt Gingrich and Nikki Haley.

The stakes:

Like most governor races around the country, the candidates have framed their agendas around the coronavirus. Many incumbents' reelection chances hinge on their pandemic response. So far, the odds are in Carney's favor.

Delaware voters tend to lean blue in elections. The governorship has been held by a Democrat for nearly three decades. Likewise, the state legislature has consistently been won by Democrats, as well as the presidency. Carney appears to be a shoo-in for another term.

The money race: Carney has collected roughly $562,000 in contributions toward his reelection effort, four times more than Murray's fundraising total of $135,000, per the latest campaign finance data.

What the polls say: Carney holds a massive double-digit lead over Murray, according to polling averages from RealClearPolitics.

What the experts say: Cook Political Report, Inside Elections and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics rate the race as solid Democratic.
