- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, his wife, are separating.
- The PM made the announcement on Instagram.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday announced on Instagram that he and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, are separating, a development that came just as Meta began ending news availability in Canada on its platforms.
"Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," Trudeau wrote in a statement posted on his official Instagram. "As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and continue to build."
The Trudeaus have been married for 18 years and have three children together. Grégoire is a former television presenter, according to the CBC. As the nation's first lady, Grégoire has spoken openly about mental health and has advocated for gender equality.
Meta, Instagram's parent company, is ending the support for news on Facebook and Instagram in retaliation for a new law that requires tech companies to pay media organizations if they host Canadian news on their platforms.
"As we've always said, the law is based on a fundamentally flawed premise," Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, "And, regrettably, the only way we can reasonably comply is to end news availability in Canada."
Stone said Meta would begin rolling out its changes over the next few weeks.
Trudeau is expected to remain prime minister of the G7 nation through 2025, thanks to a deal his party helped broker last year.
