  • Two days after the debate, Trump tested positive for COVID-19 after one of his closest aides who was at the debate, Hope Hicks, also tested positive.
  • "Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden underwent PCR testing for COVID-19 today and COVID-19 was not detected," the Bidens' primary care physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said in a statement.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife have tested negative for the novel coronavirus, their primary care physician said in a statement Friday. Biden got tested for the virus, which causes a disease known as COVID-19, shortly after President Donald Trump tested positive for it.

"Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden underwent PCR testing for COVID-19 today and COVID-19 was not detected," the Bidens' primary care physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, said in a statement.

Biden's vice presidential running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris, also tested negative for the virus on Friday, a Harris aide told NBC News.

Trump and Biden attended the first presidential debate of the election season on Tuesday. The two men were socially distanced but neither were wearing masks while on stage. One of Trump's closest advisers, Hope Hicks, was also at the debate and traveled to and from the venue with Trump and several of his family members, aides, and campaign officials, most of whom were maskless.

The next day, Hicks traveled to a rally in Minnesota with the president and a number of his advisers, including the White House aide Stephen Miller. She reportedly began experiencing symptoms en route to the rally.

CBS News' Weijia Jiang tweeted that Hicks was tested twice Wednesday and that White House aides knew about her positive diagnosis by Thursday. CNN's Kaitlan Collins tweeted that "a small group" of White House officials "were aware" of Hicks' positive test by Thursday morning. The New York Times cited one source as saying the positive test came on Thursday.

That afternoon, Trump attended a fundraiser with supporters at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. About 100 people were at the event, and The Times reported that the president appeared lethargic while attending.
