Jared Kushner was diagnosed with thyroid cancer while he was working in the White House under the Trump administration, according to an excerpt of his forthcoming memoir that was obtained by The New York Times.

Despite the extraordinary number of leaks to come out of the White House during the Trump era, Kushner was able to keep his illness hidden from the public.

"On the morning that I traveled to Texas to attend the opening of a Louis Vuitton factory, White House physician Sean Conley pulled me into the medical cabin on Air Force One," Kushner wrote in the book, "Breaking History: A White House Memoir," which is set to be published on August 23. "'Your test results came back from Walter Reed,' he said. 'It looks like you have cancer. We need to schedule a surgery right away.'"

Kushner, former President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor, was diagnosed in October 2019. The cancer was caught early, Kushner said, but a "substantial part" of his thyroid was removed.

He sought to hide his illness from the president, but Trump ultimately found out. "This was a personal problem and not for public consumption," Kushner said. "With the exception of Ivanka, Avi, Cassidy and Mulvaney, I didn't tell anyone at the White House — including the president."

But the day before Kushner's surgery was scheduled, Trump called his son-in-law into the Oval Office and asked if he was nervous about the procedure, he wrote.

"How do you know about it?" Kushner asked.

"I'm the president," Trump said in response, per Kushner. "I know everything. I understand that you want to keep these things quiet. I like to keep things like this to myself as well. You'll be just fine. Don't worry about anything with work. We have everything covered here."
