A Texas lawmaker investigated for having sex with an intern has resigned. But he didn't apologize, angering his Republican colleagues.

Rep. Bryan Slaton, 45, resigned after a Texas House investigative committee recommended he be expelled after finding that Slaton invited a 19-year-old intern to his apartment, plied her with alcohol until she was "really dizzy," and then had sex with her.

Slaton is married with a young child and calls himself a "Christian conservative." He has been outspoken against transgender issues, including claiming that drag events catered toward children were a "disgusting practice," "absolutely sick," and would lead to children being "sexually exploited."

Some of Slaton's fellow Republicans expressed outrage at his conduct and his resignation, which notably lacked an apology, according to the Texas Tribune.

"His resignation gave no apology to the young woman he violated, his wife whom he betrayed or his district that he failed," Rep. Steve Toth said on Twitter. "No remorse. No acceptance of responsibility. He's the victim that rides off into the sunset. That was the resignation of a narcissist."

The House may still take up the vote to expel Slaton, who is considered an officer of the state until a successor is elected.

Matt Rinaldi, chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, said Slaton "rightly resigned," adding that his behavior detailed in the investigative report "should never be tolerated and is proper grounds for expulsion," the Tribune reported. Republican cohorts from two of the three counties he represents asked him to step down, and more than half of the 62-member State Republican Executive Committee had done the same by Sunday night.

Slaton also lost an endorsement from the Texas Right to Live, a Christian anti-abortion group whose spokesperson said they were "praying for a biblical response for all those involved" in the situation, according to the Tribune.

He retained support from Bianca Gracia, an outspoken Trump supporter who launched a failed bid for the Texas Senate in the midterms.

"Who set him up? Why?" Gracia asked on Twitter. "They go after all our reps that actually want to get things done. Instead of the house getting its work done they want to focus on removing other reps."

The investigative report stated that Slaton had unprotected sex with the 19-year-old intern, who was a virgin, and who later told one of her peers that if she "hadn't been drunk, she would not have done it," according to the report.

The committee's investigation said Slaton engaged in harassment and retaliation when he pressured the intern that "nothing would happen as long as her and her friends keep quiet." Slaton also asked a fellow lawmaker to "support" him and keep the situation a secret, the investigation report said.

"Slaton has not expressed regret or remorse for his conduct to the Committee. Slaton has not publicly expressed regret or remorse for his conduct," the report, dated May 6, said.

Slaton's attorney did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
