Former Trump advisor says the Supreme Court leak is an 'insurrection' worse than the Capitol riot
- Jenna Ellis said the SCOTUS leaker is guilty of a more significant insurrection than Jan 6.
- Conservatives have accused the leaker of seeking to derail the draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Jenna Ellis, a former legal advisor to former President Donald Trump, claimed that the leak of the Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade constituted a bigger insurrection than the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
In an interview with the far-right Newsmax network Tuesday, Ellis echoed prominent conservatives in launching hyperbolic attacks on the person behind the leak of the draft decision to overturn the landmark 1973 abortion-rights ruling.
Conservatives have speculated that the leaker is a liberal clerk seeking to build public pressure on conservative justices not to finalize the draft decision.
"Democrats just want America the way they want it and they don't care who they have to hurt and punish on the way," Ellis told Newsmax.
"And so what no one is saying about this is this wasn't just an act of civil disobedience, this is an insurrection. You want to talk about January 6, that's completely different, this is something that is actually trying on purpose to undermine the rule of law."
Ellis remarks distilled two key GOP themes: The bid to play down the significance of the Capitol attack, and the focus on the identity and motive of the SCOTUS leaker.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has already called for criminal charges against whoever leaked the draft opinion.
Meanwhile, Democrats including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have accused Republicans of seeking to use speculation about the leaker as a smokescreen because they know repealing Roe v. Wade is deeply unpopular with most Americans.
Ellis served as a legal advisor to Trump during the 2020 election, helping to spearhead his legal attempt to overturn its result. Trump's claims of mass fraud by Democrats were rejected or defeated in multiple court cases.
The people who attacked the Capitol on January 6 were largely motivated by the false election fraud claims, and were seeking to halt Joe Biden's certification as president.
