The 24-term Republican incumbent Rep. Don Young has successfully defended his seat in Alaska's at-large congressional district after a challenge from the independent Alyse Galvin.

The candidates

Young is the longest-tenured member of the US House of Representatives and is the longest-serving Republican representative in the party's history. He was originally elected in 1972 in a special election after Rep. Nick Begich, whom Young had previously lost an election to, was killed in a plane crash.

He serves as chairman emeritus of the House Natural Resources Committee, which he chaired for six years from 1995 to 2001, and as a member of the House Transportation Committee.

Young is also known for some of his in-office antics. Politico reported that John Boehner, the former House speaker, was once threatened by Young with a knife to his neck in a House chamber — not the first time Young had brandished a knife during his time in Congress. As Politico said, Young and Boehner later became good friends.

Galvin is a small-business owner and former teacher. She originally tried to defeat Young in 2018 but fell short by just 6.6%. Galvin is a founder of Great Alaska Schools, a nonpartisan coalition that advocates higher-quality public schooling in Alaska. Her campaign platform was centered on addressing climate change, increasing funding in the education systems, and lowering healthcare costs.

A poll of the race conducted by The New York Times and Siena College on October 9-14 found Young leading Galvin by 8 points, 49% to 41%.

The district

Alaska's at-large congressional district covers the entire state. In 2016, the state voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in a 53%-38% split. The state's electoral votes have solely gone to Republican presidential candidates since 1968, when Richard Nixon was elected to office.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Galvin both outraised and outspent Young. Galvin brought in $4.3 million, spent $3.6 million, and had about $729,000 in cash on hand, while Young raised $1.7 million, spent $1.5 million, and had roughly $313,000 in cash on hand.

What some of the experts say

The race between Young and Galvin was rated as "leans Republican" by The Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics and "likely Republican" by Inside Elections.
