Dozens of protesters were arrested outside the Brooklyn home of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York on Friday.

The group demanded that the Democratic leader push for a cease-fire as he is set to lead a bipartisan delegation to Israel this weekend, according to WABC-TV New York.

The arrests included rabbis and several descendants of Holocaust survivors, according to Jewish Voice for Peace, with many attendees holding a banner that read "Jews Say — Stop Genocide Against Palestinians" as they blocked entry to the street where the senator resides.

At least 57 individuals were arrested, according to WABC-TV New York. The group, made up mostly of Jewish New Yorkers, chanted "Not in our name" throughout the protest.

New York state Assemblyman Zohran K. Mamdani of Queens on Friday evening took to X to announce that he had also been arrested, writing that he was calling on Schumer to "publicly support a cease-fire in Gaza."

"As the war drum beats across the US & Palestinians continue to be killed indiscriminately, now is the time to stand up," Mamdani said.

The protest in Brooklyn occurred following other pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-demonstrations that had been held throughout New York City, notably in Times Square in Manhattan.

Before his trip to Israel, Schumer on Friday said on X that he was having Shabbat dinner with his family.

Many individuals in the pro-Palestinian group condemned the killing of innocent civilians in Israel but also remarked on the deaths of Palestinians who had no connection to the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, which left at least 1,300 people dead in Israel last week.

According to Gaza's health ministry, more than 2,200 Palestinians — including 500 children — have been killed since the beginning of the conflict. More than 6,600 Palestinians have also been injured, it said.

The Israeli Air Force on Thursday said that it had "dropped about 6,000 bombs against Hamas targets" in the Gaza Strip, the densely-populated enclave on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

The strikes have severely damaged vast portions of neighborhoods in Gaza.

Israel has also cut off food, water, electricity, and fuel supplies to Gaza. It gave resident of northern Gaza, more than one million people, a deadline to evacuate before an expected ground invasion. That deadline has now passed.

"Forget about food, forget about electricity, forget about fuel. The only concern now is just if you'll make it, if you're going to live," Palestinian Red Crescent spokesperson Nebal Farsakh told The Associated Press.
