Caitlyn Jenner brushed off accusations she betrayed the trans community over her comment about girls' sports teams

Caitlyn Jenner has shrugged off accusations that she betrayed the transgender community over her comments that trans girls should not play on girls' school sports teams.

Jenner, who is running for California governor, told TMZ on Saturday: "I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls' sports in school. It just isn't fair. And we have to protect girls' sports in our schools."

Jenner, who came out as a transgender woman in June 2015 and biologically transitioned in 2017, was accused of causing huge damage to the trans cause across the US at a time when transgender people's rights were being threatened.

Bills targeting transgender people's participation in sports have been proposed in at least 28 state legislatures.

Appearing on "Hannity" on Wednesday night, Jenner chose not to respond to her critics after the host Sean Hannity said many people were "mad" about her comments.

"I move on" Jenner said. "I want to be a role model and a leader."

Jenner went on to say she was not done talking about the issue.

"I just said biological boys in sports," she said. "There's more to it than that, and I think in the future I will explain more of that."

Among those criticizing Jenner were the drag queen Trinity The Tuck, real name Ryan Taylor, and the Kansas state Rep. Stephanie Byers.

"STOP finding ways to delegitimize someone's gender. SHAME ON U," Taylor tweeted Sunday.

Byers, the first transgender lawmaker in Kansas, recently told Insider that Jenner was putting her celebrity and success first.

"We know that she does not speak for the entire trans community. She, because of her celebrity status, was kind of placed in that position," Byers said.

"She has brought some attention, especially to some of the struggles with trans youth, but oftentimes her celebrity status becomes the one thing she is most interested in."

Jenner announced last month that she was running against Gov. Gavin Newsom in a California recall election. Jenner is said to be working with Brad Parscale, a veteran of Donald Trump's presidential campaigns.

In the interview with Hannity on Wednesday, Jenner also backed Trump's border wall with Mexico and praised him as a "disruptor."

She also repeatedly mentioned her private plane and suggested that support for public transportation was not necessary.
